Villa Maria Villa for Rent Greece Island of Skyros
Cats

There are many stray and feral cats on Skyros

Cats

The start of a small cat sanctuary has begun....'TAILS' of Skyros has now been formed and a permanent sanctuary is desperately needed.

We are feeding a lot of cats daily, and organising neutering programmes for charity vets to come to the island, but this is only possible a couple of times a year. We need more funds for these neutering exercises to keep the cat population down. There is no permanent vet on the island.

We see that all the cats within our care are fed, neutered, anti flea treated, ears and eyes dealt with and first injections given where possible. Rehoming is difficult, but we are lucky to have a few people who are looking after 20 plus cats each! Cats can give birth 4 plus times a year and this results in litters of 1 to 4 plus kittens. You can imagine the multiplication!

We are also helping stray dogs.  Puppies are born here all the time as no neutering programme is available on the island yet. Any vets or vet nurses reading this... we would love your help and can offer you accommodation and board for a semi holiday in return for some of your services!

These are some of the cats we have rescued:

  • 1. Max - a thin, feral black and white male with half a tail. Now restored to his full glory and wears a smart collar. Very affectionate and a real pleasure. He is neutered.

  • 2. Mrs. Mew Mew - the Matriach! A stray - thin and fed up. Pregnant and produced one kitten. Now a portly bagpuss and sleeps up on the balcony on her favourite blanket. She is now neutered.

  • 3. Baby - the kitten of Mrs. Mew Mew - now a fully grown cat. Almost white and very placid. Male and neutered.

  • 4. Tabs - 2nd litter of Mrs. Mew Mew before neutering. A large and beautiful tortoisehell. Male Neutered.

  • 5. Ginger - 2nd litter of Mrs. Mew Mew - ginger and white - likes to sleep by the radiator, when he can get inside! Male and Neutered.

  • 6. Chevalier - 3rd litter of Mrs. Mew Mew. Tortoishell Male - is allowed in the house as a pal to his sister, who has brain damage. He is male and neutered.

  • 7. Ga Ga - Poor little cat with brain damage - otherwise known as Wonky. She nearly died and we nursed her back to health with antibiotics, honey and water. She is half the size of
her brother and sister and is allowed to live in the house. Sadly, she produced 3 kittens, but would not feed them and they all died. She is now neutered.

  • 8. Teegar - ginger and white sister to Chevalier and Ga Ga. Comes for a walk with the dogs. We think, she thinks, she is a dog! Neutered female.

  • 9. Sooty - was thin and feral. All black with white spot. Wears a red collar now and is a healthy cat. Neutered male.

  • 10. Prince - a rather sad feral, very thin, but now healthy and neutered male. Likes to still ferret in the rubbish tip.

  • 11. Pirate - came to us with one eye hanging out - this was treated and he looks at us sideways. A very shy cat, but has been neutered and sleeps in his favourite place in the basement. He could not eat for a while and had to have 2 bad teeth removed,.

  • 12. Helmetina - arrived starving and very nervous. Has one ear. Ginger and white female. Now calmed down. Wears her red collar proudly and has now put on weight. She had 3 kittens before neutering which we have kept.  She brought them to us on the Royal Wedding Day, so we have named them William, Kate and Wilhemena.

  • 13. Esmerelda - a white, large cat with blotches. Female and neutered. Is always hungry!

  • 14.Daisy - a ginger female - neutered - quite shy, but likes her food.

  • 15. Lion King - an old ginger tom, now neutered - walks and looks like a lion. Is very kindly and had a very infected mouth , which has been treated and 2 teeth removed. He cannot miaow!

  • 16. Micro - a kitten named Micro - grey and white and has become the constant companion of Lion King. We think Micro was thrown into our garden during one night. Female and still to be neutered.

  • 17. Fatty Arbuckle - a fat cat, grey and white, with a large gash on her neck. This is getting better. She is always desperate for food and tries to steal everybody elses! Neutered and only half a tail.

  • 18. Grey Owl - the loudest cat - screams for food. Upsets all the others. Has a beautiful face - female grey and white and still to be neutered.

  • 19. Billy - a large tortoisehell male now neutered with a fat face and a funny floppy ear. Rather sad old boy, but likes his food.

  • 20. Kevin - a huge ginger tom - still to be neutered. Placid and knows his place.

  • and more and more...

Thanks to my own dogs, Molly - a lovely border collie and Alpha - a soppy daschund, who put up with all the cats willingly. Sometimes stealing the cat food and taking it in turns to look after
little Ga Ga.
